Chinese New Year!

Tuesday 1 February

Did you know it is the Year of the TIGER!

Today is Chinese New Year! In class we have been watching a video and learning all about this tradition.

Dahlia is half Chinese and spent most of her life living in China. She made some crafts with her mum to decorate their house and wanted to show them to Hummingbird Class. HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!

Celebrating Black History Month

Hummingbirds celebrated Black History Month by presenting an exhibition to Upper School. The children researched inspirational individuals who made and impact on how black people were perceived.

Class Drop-in Session: Key Information for Parents and Carers
    Monday 6th September 2021

    • Curriculum: Please see our curriculum grid to find out what your child will be learning this term. This is updated every term and is always available on the website.
    • Website: You will find a huge amount of additional information on the school website such as policies, parent letters, newsletters and dinner menus. Each class has a “class page”, too, which we try to update with photos etc regularly.
    • PE Days: Please ensure your child has appropriate and necessary PE kit and wears this into school for the day on PE lesson days (Mondays and Thursdays in Hummingbird Class).
    • School uniform: Please ensure your child is wearing appropriate school uniform on other days. A reminder that longer hair should be tied back and your child should wear sensible black shoes please.
    • Reading book and Pink contact book: Your child will now have a school reading book and a pink home contact book which should go home and come into school everyday. Please make a note of any reading you do with your child at home, and also use this book to write any non-urgent messages to us. Please also bear with us with your child's reading level - this may differ from infant school to begin with!
    • Parent Volunteer: If any parent or carer would like to come into school as a volunteer, for hearing readers or helping on trips, please speak to me. An up-to-date DRB certificate will be required.
    • Water bottles: All children should have a reusable water bottle in school at all times. This should be left at school for the week and we will send them home for wash on Fridays.
    • Parents’ consultations will take place on Monday 18th October 1.15 – 7 pm. More information to follow at a later date.
    • There will be an Christmas Nativity play for the Year 3 children. An afternoon performance will take place at St Alphege Church on Tuesday 7 December (TBC)
    • If there is anything you would like to tell me or discuss that you would rather not write in your child’s contact book, we can find a mutually convenient time to meet. Please contact the office, make a note in your child’s yellow diary or speak to me at drop-off or home time.

    Remote Learning Work

The children have brilliantly adapted to their remote learning lessons and curriculum work via Microsoft TEAMS. Miss Braid has been in her class with those children in school and together they have all managed to interact and enjoy some lessons together.

It is obviously not the same as all being together in person, but lovely to see the technology working in practice!

Scroll down to discover the children's work, pictures as well as education resources.

You might spot a familiar face from Bluebell Class painting a rainbow in some new artwork if you are up by Church Street Playing fields. The Monument Pub have commissioned street artist Catman to add some artwork to their walls, as a way of showing support for the health and care workers currently on the frontline. What a lovely way to share some positivity!

    Quarantine Question Time!

What animal would Miss Braid like to keep as a pet in her back garden and is there a rainbow in her window? Does Mr Hadlow find it easier to teach Lynx Class or his own children and what is his embarrassing disco move! Can you guess what Mr Baker's favourite Lockdown Lunch is and what new skill has he learned.  To find out, click on Mr Hadlow, Mr Baker and Miss Braid's Quarantine Question Time video as they reveal all!

    Hi Hedgehogs!

    Oxford Owl: Free ebooks

I realised that some of you may be finding regular reading a little tricky whilst you're away from school - libraries are closed and you cannot just wander down the corridor to choose another book from the shelf...

So, with that in mind, have set up an account on the Oxford Owl website. The company that made this site are the people who publish all the "scheme" books we have at school so it will be particularly helpful for those of you that are on stage books. That said, the "e-books" on offer in their "e-library" are appropriate for those up to age 11 so you 'free readers' will find it useful too!

Get onto website using this link then click on "My class login" at the top of the page.

Log in using the username: Endowed Hedgehogs and the password: missbraid (I originally set this up for my class before realising how many others may need this too!). You can browse the e-books by age range, series or theme. You can turn the pages just like in a real book, and even have a narrator read along with you! Such a great resource, I hope you get lots from it.

    Letter from Bradbury Grange

Exciting news: Dorcas received a reply from a resident of Bradbury Grange! And what a reply....99 years old! Imagine that.

Jean is going to be 100 very soon and she is an author of children's books and stories.

More exciting news, Arthur also received a reply from Jean - what a wonder lady.

    Term 5 TT Rockstars Results

Hello all of you Times Tables Rockstars!

It's been four weeks since our TTRockstars Championship winners were announced and we've been keeping count of all the coins that you've earned since.

This term's class winners are Lynx Class with an impressive 96,361 coins.

A massive well done and thank you from all of the Lynx Class goes to Lily who earned 45,712 coins on her own! An amazing achievement, beating some of the other classes' combined scores! This means that Lily is our TTRockstars Queen for Term 5. Congratulations Lily!

Kurt in Year 3 put in a valiant effort, earning over 18,000 coins for 2nd place and Stuart in Year 6 finished 3rd with over 12,000 coins.

Well done to everyone who took part this term and don't forget to keep practising over the next few weeks! Perhaps the TTRockstar trophy can move from Lynx Class next term - it's becoming part of the furniture in there!   Mr Leone
