History

Intent, implementation and impact of History

Intent

At Whitstable-Endowed we aim to provide our children with a passion and confidence for studying History. We provide a curriculum in line with the National Curriculum expectations whereby the children will be taught a balance of British History as well as significant aspects of History from the wider world. We aim to teach our children about a variety of historical events, figures and ancient civilizations, where they appear on a timeline and develop skills to critique, analyse and evaluate the impact they had on the world we live in today.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to teach and develop a variety of historical skills and chronology. It inspires the children’s curiosity to know more about the past and encourages them to ask questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Children’s historical skills and knowledge will be developed and built on as they progress through the school. Furthermore, to allow our children to make links and comparisons between different periods and figures throughout history, we will regularly question the children on prior learning.

Each year, the children will study 3 history topics, and during their time at The Endowed, the children will study twelve separate units of History. In order to stimulate our children’s curiosity for the subject, we aim to provide our children with a variety of historical experiences both inside and outside of the classroom throughout their time at The Endowed.

Impact

By the time children leave The Endowed they should have developed a secure knowledge and understanding of people, events and contexts from the historical periods they have covered. They will be accustomed to analysing and evaluating historical artefacts and sources to reach their own, informed conclusions. Furthermore, we hope that they will have developed the ability to think critically about history and communicate their thoughts and ideas confidently. Finally, and most importantly, we wish to create enthusiastic and confident historians who can apply the different skills learned during their time at The Endowed, to any periods of History they study in the future.
